A family church, at its best, is not a church with a good kids' program bolted on. It is one where the children, the teenagers, and the adults are all being pointed to the same Jesus, in the same building, on the same night — and where the parents get to hear the sermon too.
That is what The Vine is trying to be at 600 Gregory Ln in Fairfield. Here is how a week actually works for a family, from the toddler up to the parents.
Sunday morning, by age
Worship starts at 11:00am. Children from nursery through fifth grade go to Branches Kids, our kids church, for their own worship, a Bible lesson pitched at their age, and a fair amount of noise. Middle and high schoolers have Alive Youth, our student ministry. Parents get the main service without steering anyone through it.
Branches Kids is run by trained volunteers with a secure check-in. If you tell us you are visiting, someone will look for your family on Sunday and show you where everyone goes.
Wednesday night is one trip, not three
Most weeknight church asks a family to solve a childcare problem before anyone can show up. Ours is built the other way round: at 6:30pm on Wednesdays, adults meet in Abide Groups while Branches Kids and Alive Youth meet in the same building. Everyone arrives in one car and goes home in it.
For a family new to the area — and in a town next to Travis, there are always a few — that midweek night is usually where the church stops being a building you visit and becomes people who know your children's names.
Teaching that reaches the dinner table
Pastor Amos Sikele preaches through books of the Bible passage by passage, and when the passage is about home, he stays on it. The Blueprint series in Ephesians gave a whole message to marriage and parenting, down to fathers being told to bring their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
On Father's Day the message went to Joshua 4, where God has Israel set up stones so that their children would one day ask what they meant. It is a fair summary of what a family church is for: giving the next generation something worth asking about.
A family for people a long way from theirs
Not everyone looking for a family church has children at home. Plenty of people here are single, newly married, retired, or living a long way from their own relatives. The Devoted series put it plainly: Jesus has made us family, and community is learning to live like it, starting around a table.
Young adults have Table Nights on Mondays and Thrive Nights through the year. You do not need to bring a family with you to find one here.
Things the whole family can come to
Trunk or Treat takes over our parking lot each fall — decorated cars, bounce houses, and candy, open to any family in town whether or not they have ever been inside. Each August we are downtown at the Tomato & Vine Festival with a free photo booth.
Dates change from year to year, so the events calendar is the place to check rather than this page.
Coming from Vacaville or Suisun City
We are in Fairfield and only in Fairfield. Families drive in from Suisun City, about two miles away, and from Vacaville, about ten miles down I-80. From Suisun City the Wednesday night is as easy as Sunday; from Vacaville, Sunday at 11:00am is the one we would suggest building around first.
Bringing the family this Sunday?
Tell us you are coming and we will have someone ready for you and your kids, or call with any question first.
